Who We Are

History

In response to the changing needs of the neighborhood, the Presbytery of St. Augustine and the former Springfield Presbyterian Church opened the doors of Urban Ministries of Springfield in 1992. In 2001, our name was changed to the Sanctuary on 8th Street after we relocated to the historic post office building. The program has grown from a dozen to over 100 children in our after school and summer camp programs.

Mission

To encourage and empower Jacksonville youth and families in need by ministering to their spiritual, physical, social, and intellectual needs.

Vision

The Sanctuary on 8th Street will become a catalyst for expanding opportunities for children and families in need through education, social services, recreation and the arts.

What We Do

Want to get involved at the Sanctuary? During our afterschool program, we always need homework helpers and study buddies. Children are at the Sanctuary from 3 to 5:30 on weekdays. You can come help with homework, and then transition to playing basketball, building Legos, or helping with one of our many enrichment activities!

During our six-week summer camp, the children are with us all day. Come visit and lead a craft or game with a group of kids, chaperone a field trip, or play outside!

We also host Saturday volunteer dates several times a year, for projects such as sprucing up the grounds, painting, cleaning, and organizing. Have a group of coworkers or friends who would enjoy this? Please let us know, and we can set up a date.

Reach out to jamie@sanctuaryon8th.org with some brief information about yourself and why you're interested in volunteering at the Sanctuary, and we will work to connect you with opportunities!
